3. Front Cover Analysis: RockSound

Left: Without CD, Right: With CD

The front cover of this magazine is very eye-catching and colourful. It contains plenty of bright plugs and puffs that will make you want to read further into the magazine. The puff at the bottom doesn't take up too much room, but is still noticeable due to it's bright, bold colour and the dark background behind it. The text (plug) is an example of what you can find inside, which may make the reader want to buy the magazine to read more inside. The masthead 'ROCK SOUND' is in a bold text, and is easily recognisable, along with the iconic 'R' seen on all merchandise and items related to Rock Sound, including the CD on the front cover. The puff in the center of the page contains the band (Asking Alexandria) that will be in the main article of the magazine. The red text on the white background stands out from the darker image behind. The puff above overlaps and contains a pull quote (“This isn’t a cliché, this is real life.”) which should be the most interesting quote from the main article inside. Both of these overlap a high quality photograph of the band, and the photographer's name would be written somewhere on the page, often next to the barcode or issue number. The banner at the top of the magazine contains small images of the posters that you will get if you buy the magazine. These will make you want to buy the magazine as it means that you get the posters inside. The left third contains the main bulk of the text on the front cover, as often, this is the only part of the cover that you see. The left third is a different colour to the rest of the cover, which makes it stand out slightly. The text at the top of the CD in the left third says "All the new band you need to hear.". "new bands" is underlined and is a different colour from the rest of the text in that sentence. The left third also contains more bands that will be in the magazine, as well as a free CD, which should make you want to buy it, as they are giving away something free. The CD doesn't hide anything of importance, apart from main bands that and songs that you will find on the CD, but you will find them written on the CD cover anyway. The banner on the corner of the CD reads 'Unmissable!'. This suggests that there is something different about this CD from the usual giveaway. The barcode, price, issue number and date are all in the bottom right corner, below the blue, circular puff. This magazine contains the standard codes and conventions of other magazines, but has it's own style and touch, making it stand out.

The Target Audience
I think the target audience would be teens, aged roughly from 12, to as old as 20, depending on interests. The audience would be interested in the music from the magazine, and topics that the magazine talks about. The audience would be both male and female, as both genders listen to this genre of music. I think that people that buy this magazine would range from working class, to perhaps lower, middle class. It is £3.99 monthly payment, which is fairly affordable each month.

Ideologies
I think that the band on the front cover are portrayed as irresponsible and possible stupid, due to the phrase “off the hook’. It’s like they’re saying that all bands should be a little reckless and go a little crazy when they’re on tour. The band on the cover is also portrayed as dark, and maybe a bit mysterious due to the lighting in the photograph used. It isn’t a bright, colourful happy photo, but it is dark and depressing in a way.
The puff in the bottom right corner with the words “massive albums from…” suggests that all the albums from the bands listed are massive, as in fantastic and brilliant.

3. Front Cover Analysis: Marie Claire

Target Audience:
The target audience for this magazine would be women roughly aged 20-35. They would be working class women, who are perhaps still into the gossip from teens gossip magazines. The price is a little higher, but it is a monthly payment, which is more affordable.

Ideologies:

This magazine is portraying the 'perfect woman' in a different light. This time, the model (Beyonce) is young and attractive. She is showing a lot of skin, and is very confident in her own body, which suggests that all women should act that way about themselves. The phrase 'speedy steps to sexy hair' suggests that all women should have 'sexy hair', and the fabulous look.

3. Front Cover Analysis: Good Housekeeping

Target Audience:
The target audience for this particular magazine would be middle aged women (40-50), possibly retired as this would give them time to do plenty of the activities mentioned on the front cover of the magazine. It is aimed at more middle class women, who, perhaps have children who have grown up and moved out. I belive that they are middle class as they can afford the £3.40 each time they buy the magazine.

Ideologies:

Lorraine Kelly is the model on the front cover, and perhaps she is there to model the 'perfect woman'. She is wearing pink, so she looks pretty, attractive and some may even say sexy. The way she is sitting looks sophisticated and maybe weak. According to the front cover of this magazine, the 'perfect woman should like the colour pink, and should be very girly. She should be good at making cakes, looking good, and making the house look good.
