10. Analysis Of Music Magazine Covers: Indie

I have chosen this front cover as it contains the typical codes and conventions for an indie music magazine. It contains the standard colours you would expect to see on the front cover of an indie magazine. These colours are red, black and white. These colours are very similar to the colours used on a rock/metal cover, although there is usually more white and sometimes yellow to make the cover seem brighter than a rock cover. Indie music is a lot softer than rock/metal, so the colours are appropriate for that genre. The text used for the masthead, main coverline and some important coverlines are bold and are mostly in red, which stands out from the background image, especially due to the fact that the subjects hair is black. There is a lack of plugs and puffs, but that is effective as the cover doesn't look so crowded and busy. Instead it looks organised and tidy. The layout doesn't follow the 'left third' rule, as most of the coverlines are on the right side instead. The image on the cover can be both male and female artists. These genders appeal to an wider audience and could potentially gain more readers.
