10. Analysis Of Music Magazine Covers: Rock/Metal

This magazine cover from Kerrang! is a typical example of a rock/metal cover. It includes the standard colours: red, black, white and yellow. These colours keep the cover neat, fairly tidy and simple. It isn't overcrowded and busy, unlike some other music magazine covers. It isn't too empty that it is plain and boring, but there is enough content to suitably cover the page. The subject of the image is male, like most of the other Kerrang! covers. This magazine cover doesn't follow the rule of the left third, as the majority of the content is along the bottom of the cover, below the main coverline. The masthead is hidden behind the main image, although you can't read all of it, I think that it is well known enough for part of it to be hidden and still understood. The headline is possibly the brightest text on the page, making it the main focal point. It is yellow and has been placed in front of the image, meaning it stands out more that other coverlines. The theme of photography has been shown on the cover well. There are plenty of hints that it is a photography related issue, but not too many that it is overpowering. For example, the camera in the subjects hand and the film strip behind the main coverline is enough to suggest the theme. Although just to confirm this, they have another article insight which reads 'Asking Alexandria. Danny shoots for Kerrang!'. It contains the usual barcode, along with the date, issue number and price in the bottom right corner.
